Peet's Coffee on Fordson Road Closes

Coffee chain closes numerous stores across the country this week including two in Northern Virginia.

Peet’s Coffee & Tea has closed its Alexandria store at 7707 Fordson Road, the company confirmed in an email to Patch on Tuesday. The closing was part of a nationwide shutdown of stores for the company. The only other store in Northern Virginia that was closed was located in Bristow, a company spokeswoman said.

Peet’s took over many locations where Caribou Coffee used to do business in Northern Virginia.

The store closed all of its Ohio stores this week and also closed stores in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Maryland.

“This year, we opened 23 stores across the greater Washington D.C. area to an overwhelmingly positive response, and are seeing high performance across the majority of our stores,” the company said in a statement.

“We are on a more improved retail trajectory in the D.C. area than our Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania markets, with our D.C. area stores having a newer store design and more food/beverage options,” the company noted.

“As we further monitor our D.C. area stores, we’ve made some adjustments to a few locations that were not performing to the high level of the majority in this market. We closed three stores on Dec. 15th– two in Virginia (Alexandria and Bristow ) and one in Baltimore - to focus on our high-performing stores. At this time, we don’t expect any additional closures in the greater D.C. area.”

“We recognize this is difficult timing. Employees in good standing will have the option to transition to another Peet’s location in the greater DC area. For those electing not to transfer, we’re providing them at least six weeks of pay that will take them through the end of January. This means we’re paying them at their normal hourly rate through the end of this year plus at least one month of severance support. For the majority of these employees who worked both at Peet’s and Caribou, they will receive additional severance based on their collective tenure with both companies.”

Peet’s Northern Virginia locations are in Vienna, Tyson’s Station, Village at Shirlington in Arlington, Fairfax-Turnpike Center, King’s Park in Springfield, Fairfax Corner in Fairfax, Brambleton Town Square in Ashburn.
