Graduates were advised to "dream big."
The sounds of raucous cheering filled the Michael M. Skinner Field House as Mount Vernon High School’s Class of 2011 proceeded into the Field House for their commencement exercises last night.
The Field House was filled with families, teachers, and graduates celebrating their accomplishments of the past four years.
Principal Nardos King addressed the graduates and advised them to “dream big.”

“Dreams help you make the impossible possible,” said King in her speech. “Continue to learn. Be curious. Learning does not just happen in a classroom.”
Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland gave the commencement address, preferring to address the graduates from his post on the floor.

“The most important part of your education was the diversity you experienced at Mount Vernon High School,” said Hyland. “You received a gift…you recognize the sameness among the differences between you.”
Senior class president Brian Fizsimmons’ speech was entertaining while providing inspiration to his fellow classmates.
Said Fitzsimmons, “The world is our oyster and we have so much to look forward to.”
