Police: Boy on Bicycle Struck By Car
The 8 year-old boy is recovering at Inova Fairfax Hospital from serious injuries.

An 8 year-old boy riding his bicycle was struck Tuesday night by a vehicle in a residential neighborhood in Mount Vernon.
The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. at Mount Vernon Memorial Highway and Surry Drive in the center turn lane, according to Fairfax County police spokesperson Lucy Caldwell. The boy turned into the path of a 2003 Mazda Tribute SUV. The child was struck and dragged more than 50 feet. Police believe the driver attempted to avoid hitting the child but was unable to do so.
The boy was wearing a bike helmet.

"Fortunately, the child was wearing a bicycle helmet and officers believed that this factor was instrumental in helping to save the boy's life," said Caldwell.
The boy was injured and taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital by helicopter, where he is recovering from serious injuries. No charges have been filed.
