Police: Pedestrian Dies in Crash on Richmond Highway

Woman, 58, was not in a crosswalk and attempted to cross in a dimly lit area, according to FCPD. Area was near Fort Belvoir.

Fairfax County Police say a pedestrian was struck Monday night on Richmond Highway and later died at an area hospital.

On Monday, May 11, shortly before 9.p.m., a 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse, driven by a 56-year-old man, was traveling southbound on Richmond Highway approaching Anderson Lane, according to police. The pedestrian, 58-year-old Sonia Granados, attempted to cross Richmond Highway from east to west, just prior to Anderson Lane and walked into the path of the Mitsubishi and was struck, police said.

She was not in a crosswalk and attempted to cross in a dimly lit area, according to FCPD. Granados was ground transported to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later, police said. Speed and alcohol were not factors for the driver of the Mitsubishi, according to police. Alcohol may have been a factor for Granados, police said. The crash remains under investigation.
