Police Respond to Reported Assault in Mount Vernon

Police believe the incident was gang-related.

Fairfax County Police responded to a reported assault Friday evening in Mount Vernon.

Police responded shortly after 6 p.m. at the 8200 block of Russell Road and met with two male victims in their early 20s, said police spokesperson Don Gotthardt. The victims initially reported standing in front of the address with a group of men approached them. One member of the group, a black male in his late teens to early 20s, punched one of the victims and the rest of the men joined in. The number of people involved has not been determined. Sometime during the fight, the victims were cut with an unknown edged weapon. Both victims were transported to local hospitals with non life-threatening injuries.

Gotthardt said the incident was most likely gang-related, but police don't believe there is a threat to public safety.
