Richmond Highway Lanes to Shift to New Bridge Over Accotink Creek

Beginning Friday, June 26, all lanes of Route 1 in southern Fairfax County will be shifted across the new bridge.

Beginning Friday, June 26, all lanes of Richmond Highway (Route 1) in southern Fairfax County will be shifted across a new bridge over Accotink Creek, according to the Federal Highway Administration Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division and the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Megaprojects program (VDOT). The lane shift is scheduled to be completed by Monday, June 29. All work is weather permitting.

This lane shift will occur along Route 1 at the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286), south of the Tulley Gate entrance of Fort Belvoir, to Britten Drive near the Inlet Cove Community.

In addition to the lane shift, there will be occasional lane closures on Route 1 in this area outside of peak travel periods to accommodate re-striping and the placement of temporary barriers to separate the construction zone from the through-traffic. Motorists should use caution when traveling in this area.

The lane shifts are part of the Route 1 Widening Project, which will add an additional lane in both directions and a 32-foot wide median for a 3.68-mile segment of Route 1 between Telegraph Road and Mount Vernon Memorial Highway in the Fort Belvoir area.
