Virginia Barbecue Opens in Mount Vernon

opened its doors at its new Mount Vernon location on Wednesday morning.

The Southern-style barbeque chain based in Ashland, Va., replaced the Quiznos at the Engleside Plaza shopping center on Richmond Highway.

Specialties include beef brisket, North Carolina-style ribs, freshly-made hush puppies, and fresh-cut French fries and onion rings. 

The restaurant was initially slated to open in May, but interior improvements delayed the store's debut by six months, according to owner Jamie Christian.

"It took a little longer because there was a Quizno's here before, and we had to change the kitchen," he said.

The restaurant plans to host a grand opening ceremony in January, Christian said.
