The Friends of Sherwood Library Bookstore will be open as usual on Wednesday, November 6, from 1-4 PM and Sunday, November 10, from 1-3 PM. Sherwood Regional Library is located at 2501 Sherwood Hall Lane, Alexandria, 22306.

All Fairfax County libraries, and the Sherwood Friends’ Bookstore, will be closed on Monday, November 11, for Veterans Day, and Tuesday, November 12, for system-wide computer updates.

This week we have two very special offerings: 1) a 1934, copyright 1962, version of “Mary Poppins” signed by the author P. L. Travers. It is published in London by Hardcourt Press. It does not have a jacket and has some issues but it is quite rare. Make an offer. 2) a first edition of Norman Maclean’s “A River Runs Through It and Other Stories.” It is printed in London and is in good to very good condition. Make an offer.

As always our special price table contains quality books at very reasonable prices. This week it includes, individually priced, 5 volumes in the 1962 “Art of the World” series, from Greystone Press; the New York Times “36 Hours” volumes, covering cities in the USA and the world; and a beautiful set of 9 volumes from Konecky & Konecky, by various authors – each volume focuses on one Civil War battle or personality.

Our hobby section has this week added U.S. Coin Digest guides from past years, and the medical section received fascinating books related to brain health.

Thanks to recent generous donations, we have added numerous like-new offerings to our children’s and young adult selections. The children’s/YA room is organized by age-appropriate levels: board books, picture (read to me) books, beginning reader, early chapter and series books, books for elementary and middle schoolers, and of course a full range of YA novels. Also on offer are activity books, classics for young readers, award winners, and storybook collections.

In the second floor lobby we have boxes of vinyl, including new donations of nearly 50 records, a table full of holiday-related books for all ages, DVDs, CDs, and vinyl, and a shelf on the cookbook cart of holiday crafts and baking.

Please note: the library’s elevator to the second floor remains out of order. Volunteers are able to assist with large volume purchases.

Our bookstore and support of the library depend on donations by members of the community. The bookstore always appreciates donations in all categories, both fiction and nonfiction. PLEASE ensure that they are in clean, resalable condition. We cannot accept magazines or encyclopedias. Receipts are available for tax purposes.

For large-volume donations (for example, multiple boxes or hundreds of items) please call the bookstore in advance to facilitate staff coordination: 703-718-8206.

Items from the ongoing book sale in the first floor hallway and in the second floor open lobby are available for purchase whenever the library is open. Help us spread the word; please forward this message to your community and neighborhood email groups.
