Local Family Brings Virginia’s First 16 Handles to Newport News on September 12

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. (September 1, 2026) – 16 Handles, the upscale frozen yogurt and dessert franchise known for its modern design and viral flavors, will debut its first Virginia shop in Newport News on September 12. The new spot, located at 12551 Jefferson Ave., Suite 205, aims to be the top community-driven destination for frozen yogurt and desserts.

Behind the opening is local entrepreneur Arun Acharya and his family, whose deep roots in Newport News and close family bond shaped the decision to bring 16 Handles to the area.

Acharya first dreamed of opening an ice cream shop nearly 20 years ago. After beginning his professional career as a mechanical engineer in India, he moved to the United States with his family in 2004 and ultimately built a career in higher education, spending 18 years helping thousands of students across the U.S. and Canada pursue careers in medicine. Along the way, he earned his MBA from William & Mary. The idea of owning a dessert shop never completely disappeared. Nearly two decades later, it resurfaced through conversations with his son.

The Acharyas were drawn to 16 Handles for its blend of frozen yogurt, ice cream and soft serve, and beyond opening day, they plan to use the store as a platform for local partnerships, school fundraisers and community events, building a gathering place that reflects the community and family ties at the heart of their story.

“As parents, we always want our children to dream big and explore the world, but there is also something very special about choosing to build where your roots are,” said Acharya. “My son grew up in this community. This is where our family has built relationships, friendships and memories. When we began talking seriously about creating something together, we realized that Newport News was not simply a place to open a business – it was the place where this story belonged.”

A Grand Opening event is set for September 12 with a ribbon cutting ceremony at noon, featuring free frozen yogurt for the first 100 guests, half-price treats from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 25% off all purchases throughout the remainder of the weekend. The event will also include a prize wheel including gift cards and limited-edition merch. Attendees can also look forward to a live DJ, face painting stations, and additional entertainment for the whole family.
