1. A study found a way to reduce coal dust in Newport News. Will it happen? (wvtf.org) — Residents in Southeast Newport News are finally seeing concrete movement on long‑standing coal dust concerns, with a new study showing an 80‑foot wind fence at local terminals could cut escaping particles by up to 89%. City leaders are seeking federal funding, while community advocates press coal companies to pay and await new state air monitors that will track pollution in Newport News neighborhoods.
   

2. Powerful Nor'easter Batters U.S. East Coast With Floods (memesita.com) — Newport News is in the bullseye of this powerful nor'easter, with forecasters warning that water backing up in the lower Chesapeake Bay could leave parts of the city flooded for hours around high tides. Strong onshore winds, a full-moon tide, and pounding surf are expected to bring dangerous coastal flooding, beach erosion, and possible power outages across southeastern Virginia and much of the East Coast.
   

3. Electra Flies Beyond The Runway (aero-news.net) — Newport News is one of several Virginia locations where Electra's hybrid‑electric EL2 aircraft has been testing ultra‑short takeoff operations from heliports, taxiways, and other nontraditional spots. Working with the FAA and state partners, the company is gathering data that could eventually bring more flexible, quieter air service to regional airports without clogging existing runways.
   

4. MAP2E Students Explore Engineering Through Water-Filtration Challenge (odu.edu) — Newport News Shipbuilding plays a key supporting role in Old Dominion University's MAP2E program, offering students access to its Scholars program, co-ops, and internships tied to local engineering careers. Incoming engineering students spent a week designing water-filtration systems, touring a regional treatment plant, and building a support network that will follow them through their first year in Hampton Roads.
