📰 News we're reading
1. Henrico pulls Flock camera access for 10 fire marshals (nbc12.com) — Henrico County has revoked Flock license plate reader access for 10 fire marshals after realizing state law doesn't allow fire department employees to use the database. Officials say the marshals' prior use in Richmond-area arson cases was lawful in intent, but any Flock evidence they gathered likely won't be admissible in court going forward.

2. Richmond High School for the Arts prepares to open new building (nbc12.com) — Richmond High School for the Arts is welcoming students into a brand-new Southside building next week, months earlier than planned after flooding closed the old facility. The modern campus features a 933-seat auditorium, new gym and arts spaces, and will eventually anchor a citywide arts program while the old building is demolished for upgraded sports facilities.

3. State didn't send enough funds for nullified redistricting vote, leaving Richmond $375K short (richmonder.org) — Richmond's election office had to cover nearly $375,000 in local tax dollars for an April redistricting referendum that was later ruled invalid, straining an already tight budget. City officials and the registrar describe cutting costs and seeking extra funding while state reimbursement fell far short of Richmond's actual expenses.

4. Governor Spanberger Urges Families to Apply for Summer Nutrition (hamptonroadsmessenger.com) — Announced from Richmond, Governor Abigail Spanberger is urging eligible Virginia families to apply for SUN Bucks, a one-time $120 summer food benefit per child, before the August 31 deadline. The program, part of a federal Summer EBT effort, helps families stretch grocery budgets through SNAP-compatible purchases and Virginia Fresh Match at farmers markets and local retailers.
