ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S IN RICHMOND NAMED IN TOP 30 WALKS ACROSS COUNTRY
Amid Pandemic Dedicated Participants Raised $512,644 for Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs
Registration is now open for the 2021 Richmond Walk to End Alzheimer’s

RICHMOND, VA, FEBRUARY 8, 2021 – The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Richmond was recently ranked the #19 Walk in the United States, raising more than $512,644. The money raised by this landmark event will fund Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs.

Due to the pandemic, instead of hosting a large gathering, the Alzheimer’s Association encouraged participants to walk as individuals or in small groups across the country. On October 31, 2020 more than 1,000 residents walked on sidewalks, tracks and trails across the Greater Richmond region.

“I want to sincerely thank our committee volunteers, sponsors, teams, and individual fundraisers for their support of the Richmond Walk to End Alzheimer's and the mission of the Alzheimer's Association, especially during 2020 and the pandemic,” said Marie Kolendo, Senior Executive Director, Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Richmond. “The funds raised through the Walk support the members of our community who are living with or caring for an individual with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia and fund critical research towards a way to treat, prevent, and ultimately cure Alzheimer's.”

The Genworth team was the top fundraising team at this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising more than $21,900. The second-place team was “Moving Forward”, raising just under $17,000. Moving Forward team is led by chapter board member Katie Hamann who is dedicated to bringing awareness and funds to ending Alzheimer's. “Fundraising for the Walk is something I do almost year-round. Especially with so many people caregiving at home and not having much of a break, they need our education and information now more than ever! I never stop asking people to help me support the Alzheimer’s Association that helps so many in our community who need it so much,” said Hamann.

In 2020, nearly 48,000 teams participated in more than 600 Walks across the country, raising more than $67 million. To register and receive the latest updates on the 2021 Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, visit alz.org/walk.
