Here are the top 3 stories today in Roanoke:
- A Roanoke Campus Safety Officer was recognized by the Salem Fire & EMS Department on Monday for his emergency response efforts during a recent structure fire. The department responded to the fire at 423 9th Street in the early morning of Sep. 25. Officer Robert Ross, who noticed the fire during his rounds and quickly called 911, is credited with helping ensure individuals in the building and nearby were made aware of the fire in time to avoid injury. (WSET)
- Officials with Roanoke City Public Schools say the district is attempting to increase security on its campuses. The district is hiring 14 new School Resource Officers (SROs) through funding provided by a four-year state grant. Thirteen of those officers will go to staffing elementary schools throughout the district, and the final officer will expand the existing security presence in the district's middle schools. (WDBJ)
- Local florist George's is partnering with MKB Realtors and TFS Roanoke to hand out 5,000 bouquets in the Roanoke Valley today. The "Petal It Forward" event surprises residents with two free bouquets — one to keep and one to give to a friend, family member, or stranger.
