TAP announces Renee Brown as 2026 Cabell Brand Hope Award recipient (theroanoketribune.org) — Roanoke residents will see local nonprofit leader Renee Brown honored with TAP's 2026 Cabell Brand Hope Award at Melrose Plaza on October 29. Brown, who calls Roanoke City home, is recognized for expanding DePaul Community Resources' services and championing kinship care and family-directed support for hundreds of families across the region and Virginia.
   

2. Roanoke resident raises concerns over illegal dumping returning to Blue Hills construction site (wsls.com) — Illegal dumping has returned to a Blue Hills construction site in Roanoke, worrying a nearby well-dependent homeowner about possible contamination and frustrated neighbors who already saw the trash cleaned up once. The city previously referred the site to state environmental regulators and says it hasn't received new complaints, but residents can still report suspected code violations online.

Sam Rasoul showed them how to turn local concerns into real bills in Richmond. Participants focused on issues like housing, education, and the environment, building on past Roanoke ideas that have already become Virginia law, such as the DMV Blue Envelope Program for people on the autism spectrum.
   

5. Feeding Southwest Virginia hosts elected officials to raise awareness of hunger (theroanoketribune.org) — Feeding Southwest Virginia recently brought about 30 elected officials, including leaders from Roanoke and Roanoke County, to its Salem distribution center to spotlight hunger during Hunger Action Month. Officials rolled up their sleeves to sort and bag potatoes while learning how federal food programs and local partnerships help feed roughly 129,000 Southwest Virginia neighbors each month.
