• Canvas is back in the classroom despite security concerns following hack (cardinalnews.org) — Roanoke City Public Schools will keep using the Canvas online learning platform this year after a major security breach, saying the company has strengthened protections. About 7,000 local middle and high school students rely on Canvas, which Virginia funds statewide, and officials weighed security, costs, and logistical hurdles before deciding not to switch systems.
   

• Residents welcome new bus stop near Valley View Walmart (wsls.com) — Roanoke riders now have a safer, closer Valley Metro stop directly in the Valley View Walmart parking lot, complete with shelters and better pedestrian access. City officials, Valley Metro, and Walmart collaborated on the redesign, and buses begin serving the new stop effective August 24, improving access to shopping and jobs in that busy retail area.
   

• Roanoke gas prices up six cents a gallon in the last week (wdbj7.com) — If you're filling up in Roanoke, expect to pay about $3.83 a gallon, up just over six cents in the last week. Local prices now range from $3.57 to $4.19, with Roanoke still slightly cheaper than the statewide average and well above last year's levels.
