Here are the top stories today in Roanoke:

  1. Earlier this week, The Salvation Army Roanoke Corps called for help in meeting their goal for their annual Angel Tree Program. As deadline day quickly approached, around 200 kids still had not been adopted. Thankfully, the community answered that call, as the organization met its goal Friday afternoon. The Roanoke Corps is now looking for volunteers to help distribute the gifts. (WDBJ7)
  2. Hollins University received an early Christmas gift of a donation of $75 million, the largest single donation the school has ever received from an alumna. The gift will create a scholarship fund to help undergraduate students, split into $25 million increments over a span of three years. The university's president Mary Dana Hinton said this will help about 20% of their student body by 2026, with scholarships to become available beginning Jun. 30. (WSLS 10)
  3. Two people were found shot at a home in the 800 block of Fenwick Drive in Roanoke County; both patients were taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with non-critical injuries. (WDBJ7)
  4. Roanoke City Public Schools' Breakfast with Santa fundraiser raised over $11,000 for its Help the Homeless Fund. (WSLS 10)
