• Salem mourns passing of councilman and longtime Civic Center official John Saunders (wfirnews.com) — Salem is mourning City Council member and longtime Civic Center leader John Saunders, who died Saturday at 66. Saunders spent 34 years at the Salem Civic Center complex and was serving a council term through 2028, meaning council will likely appoint a temporary replacement before a special election is called. 
• Salem's Valleydale Apartments expansion continues with second building under construction (wdbj7.com) — New apartments are rising quickly at Valleydale Apartments in Salem, with the second building expected within six months and a third planned, expanding local housing options. City economic development leaders say the project supports growth in Salem and the Roanoke region, while the property manager reports strong demand and special rent discounts for City of Salem employees.
