Suffolk awarded $157,600 for recovery specialist (suffolknewsherald.com) — Suffolk is getting $157,600 in opioid settlement money to fund a peer recovery specialist who will coach residents through treatment, harm reduction services, and housing or transportation hurdles. The position will work with Suffolk’s Behavioral Health Multidisciplinary Team and is funded for fiscal 2027 as part of a broader statewide opioid settlement grant program.
   

2. Hampton Roads water officials urge conservation as drought continues and reservoir levels fall (13newsnow.com) — Suffolk’s role in the regional water system is front and center as Western Branch Reservoir, located in the city, sits several feet below normal and helps supply Suffolk and neighboring communities. Officials urge residents to voluntarily cut nonessential water use now, explaining that months of below-normal rainfall have lowered reservoirs across Hampton Roads and that conservation could help avoid mandatory restrictions later.
   

3. Friday Night RedZone: Indian River takes down King's Fork in battle of unbeatens (wtkr.com) — Suffolk football fans saw King’s Fork fall 41-28 at home to unbeaten Indian River in a battle of Southeastern District leaders, despite a thrilling, back-and-forth first half. The roundup also highlights Nansemond River’s win over Lakeland and Nansemond-Suffolk’s big victory over Fork Union, plus scores from across Hampton Roads.
   

4. No plastic bags: Recycling campaign tells Hampton Roads what goes in the bin (pilotonline.com) — Suffolk households were among 32,000 across Hampton Roads whose recycling carts were inspected to cut down on contamination, especially plastic bags and bagged recyclables. The campaign significantly improved bin cleanliness and fed into a new “What Do You Do With This?” education effort, aiming to extend the life of the regional landfill and boost recycling rates for cities like Suffolk.
