Downtown Suffolk Amtrak station could see 24,000 passengers per year if built (wavy.com) ā€” A new feasibility study says a downtown Suffolk Amtrak stop could attract about 24,000 boardings a year, reviving passenger rail service to the city. Consultants say thereā€™s strong enough demand to keep studying locations, costs, and stakeholder input, potentially saving residents trips to Norfolk to catch westbound trains.

Man seen arrested in viral video by ICE in Suffolk released from immigration detention (wtkr.com) ā€” An undocumented Guatemalan man seen in a viral video being tackled and punched by ICE officers near Sentara BelleHarbour in North Suffolk has been released from federal immigration detention by a judgeā€™s order. His attorney says this is an early step in his effort to remain in the U.S., as they seek a full immigration court hearing on his status.

Despite budget cuts, Virginia Humanities awards 29 grants, including 11 in Hampton Roads (pilotonline.com) ā€” Virginia Humanities has awarded 29 grants statewide despite major federal funding cuts, and the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is among the Hampton Roads recipients. The center will receive $6,000, alongside other local organizations, to support programs that preserve and share regional culture even as overall grant dollars shrink.

Community Services Board proposes crisis center in Zuni (smithfieldtimes.com) ā€” Western Tidewater Community Services Board, which also operates a clinic in Suffolk, is proposing a shortā€‘term crisis therapeutic home in Zuni to stabilize people experiencing behavioral health emergencies. The center would offer up to 30ā€‘day stays with trained clinical staff, and Isle of Wight officials say it will require a conditional use permit under county zoning rules.
