📰 News we're reading

1. USPS audit: Mail delays, improper property conditions at local post offices (wtkr.com) — Mail delivery problems in Chesapeake are part of a broader USPS audit that found tens of thousands of delayed letters and serious safety and security issues at Hampton Roads postal facilities. Inspectors cited inexperienced carriers, poor oversight, blocked fire exits, and questionable package scanning practices that sometimes logged deliveries miles from the correct address.

2. BBQ chain Smokey Bones shuts down abruptly in Hampton Roads (wavy.com) — Smokey Bones has abruptly closed all its restaurants nationwide, including its Chesapeake and Virginia Beach locations, ending the chain’s presence in Hampton Roads. The company’s website and social media shifted quickly from promoting a new menu to confirming the shutdown, following FAT Brands’ earlier Chapter 11 filing.

3. Restaurant closures hit Virginia Beach, from chains to local spots (wtkr.com) — Smokey Bones’ shutdown is part of a broader wave of restaurant closures hitting nearby Virginia Beach, with both chains and local spots struggling. While the statement thanks Chesapeake and Virginia Beach diners, local owners mainly cite staffing challenges, rising costs, and tighter household budgets as reasons more doors are closing.

4. 17 upcoming May Day events and protests in Virginia (vadogwood.com) — Chesapeake residents can join a May Day “Workers Over Billionaires” rally on May 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 638 Battlefield Blvd. The event is part of a statewide day of worker-focused protests and actions highlighting affordability concerns and support for immigrants, workers, and people with disabilities.
