Carter Boehm, Founder of Ponderosa Films, On Black Panther
Carter Boehm highlights the importance of Black Panther to Hollywood and how it could mean big Oscar gold for Marvel and Disney.

I’ve discussed this in previous blogs, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is truly something to marvel at (no pun intended). Regardless of your thoughts on the films as a whole, you must give Disney and Marvel Studios credit for consistently putting out high-quality films that all tell one overarching narrative. Additionally, these films have gone on to gross billions of dollars worldwide (17 billion to be exact), meaning that Disney and Marvel Studios don’t plan on ending their cash cow anytime soon. In fact (and quite unsurprisingly), they are doubling down on their efforts. It isn’t enough to have some of the most iconic characters and films in the history of cinema, or that they have made billions of dollars in the last 10 years; now they need to win an Academy Award in order to truly show that Marvel Studios is the absolute ruler of Hollywood.
That’s right, Marvel Studios and Disney are planning on pushing one of this year’s most culturally significant films for a bevy of awards. Black Panther, one of 2018’s biggest hits, earned rave reviews from critics and racked up $1.3 billion worldwide in box office sales. But, according to multiple reports, Disney wants to take the film even further, and has submitted Black Panther for a bevy of high-profile awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Song).
