Carter Boehm, Founder of Ponderosa Films, On Female-Led Films
Carter Boehm discusses whether or not female-led films are more successful than male-led films.

It seems a major sea change is occurring in Hollywood when it comes to the definition of “blockbuster” movies. According to research done by the Creative Arts Agency and a tech company called shift7, films of all genres with female lead roles outperformed those with male leads in their same categories every year from 2014 to 2017. Moreover, while every film that has grossed more than $1 billion since 2012 was not female-led, every film that grossed more than $1 billion did pass the Bechdel Test.
For those unfamiliar, the rubric of the Bechdel Test is simple: a film must have more than one female character and two female characters must speak to one another on the topic of something other than a man. This sounds like a low bar to set, but considering the second decade of the 21st century is the first time the world’s most popular films all clear it brings Hollywood’s diversity problem and recent harassment scandals into even starker contrast. Stop and consider some of your favorite movies and see if they pass the Bechdel Test. The Harry Potter series? Apparently, only Deathly Hallows: Part I! Toy Story? Hell nah. Any of the Lord of the Rings trilogy? Keep looking, because ain’t no ladies talking to any other ladies about anything but dudes on this epic journey!
