Carter Boehm, Founder of Ponderosa Films, On Leonardo DiCaprio

Carter Boehm provides an overview on why Leonardo DiCaprio had to give back one of his Oscars.

One of Hollywood’s leading men has been forced to part with one of his most-prized possessions- an Academy Award statue. Leonardo DiCaprio handed over an Oscar to the federal government, but it’s not the one he earned for his role in 2016’s “The Revenant.”

After being passed over by the Academy five times- including once for his nomination as Best Supporting Actor in the film that put the actor on the map, “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”- DiCaprio finally won an Oscar for Best Actor at the 2016 Academy Awards show. While that beloved Oscar is still in his possession, the star was ordered to give up Marlon Brando’s Oscar- which he won for Best Actor in 1954’s “On the Waterfront.”

DiCaprio received Brando’s Oscar as a gift from Malaysian financier Jho Low, who is currently under investigation by the Justice Department for allegedly defrauding an investment fund. As part of the investigation, DiCaprio had to hand over the Oscar in addition to other items Low had gifted him- including a Pablo Picasso painting.

Low reportedly purchased Brando’s Oscar from a film memorabilia dealer for $600,000 after the award mysteriously vanished from the late actor’s Hollywood estate. Low has been known to gift other celebrities with unique memorabilia- including a Crystal Music Company grand piano which he gave to Australian model, Miranda Kerr.

Kerr, as well as other celebrities who received gifts from Low, will be forced to hand over any of those possessions to the federal government. As for Low, he is currently believed to be hiding out in China in an attempt to evade the Justice Department.
