VIENNA, VA — A new roadway configuration is coming to Interstate 66 between Nutley Street and Vaden Drive, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The new configuration of lanes on westbound I-66 will start on or around Wednesday, July 6 during the early morning hours. Between Nutley Street and Vaden Drive, the two right lanes will be separated by barrier from the left two lanes. Signage will direct drivers to stay to the right at the split to exit at the Vienna/Fairfax/GMU Metrorail Station (Country Creek Road and Virginia Center Boulevard).

The temporary traffic shift will remain for about two months due to the Transform Outside the Beltway project, which will add I-66 Express Lanes between the Capital Beltway and University Boulevard in Gainesville. The traffic shift will make room for the future I-66 Express Lanes in the center of the interstate.

To prepare for the new configuration of lanes, three lanes of westbound I-66 will be closed between Cedar Lane and Vaden Drive from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5. The ramp from westbound I-66 to northbound and southbound Nutley Street will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Traffic will be detoured to exit at southbound Route 123, keep right to the I-66 ramp and exit at Nutley Street.
