Overnight Closures, Stoppages Planned On I-66, 495 This Week
Bridge beam installation at I-66 and I-495 will have overnight lane closures and traffic stoppages over three nights.
FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Overnight lane closures, ramp closures and traffic stoppages are planned on Interstates 66 and I-495 this week, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The traffic impacts will happen on westbound I-66 and northbound I-495 Tuesday to Thursday. Crews will be working on bridge beam installation at the I-66/495 interchange as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. Drivers on I-66 and I-495 during the overnight hours should expect delays and consider alternate routes, according to VDOT.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, westbound I-66 approaching I-495 will be reduced to one lane with multiple 20-minute stoppages. On Tuesday and Thursday nights, northbound I-495 approaching I-66 will have multiple 20-minutes stoppages. Two lanes will be open on Tuesday night and a single lane will be open on Thursday night.

VDOT will also close the ramp from eastbound I-66 to northbound I-495 on Thursday night. Drivers will be directed to stay to the left to take the exit to the northbound 495 Express Lanes and will not be charged for the detour to the 495 Express Lanes.

Tuesday, Aug. 10:
I-66 West at I-495 will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching I-495 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during the overnight hours. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Two lanes of I-495 North at I-66 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during the overnight hours. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
One right lane of the 495 Express Lanes North at I-66 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
The ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West will be reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 11:
I-66 West at I-495 will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching I-495 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
The ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West will be reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Thursday, Aug. 12:
I-66 West at I-495 will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching I-495 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
I-495 North at I-66 will be reduced to a single travel lane approaching I-66 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers should expect periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during the overnight hours. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
The ramp from I-66 East to I-495 North will be closed from midnight to 4 a.m. Traffic will be directed to continue east and stay to the left to take the exit to the 495 Express Lanes North. Drivers will not be charged for using the Express Lanes for the detour. The ramp will reopen at 4 a.m.
The ramp from I-495 North to I-66 West will be reduced to one lane from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m.
Other upcoming traffic impacts include:
- During the overnight hours on Wednesday and Thursday, Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) over I-66 will be reduced to one travel lane in each direction. Two-way traffic will run in the northbound lanes.
- During the overnight hours on Wednesday and Thursday, I-66 West will be closed at Route 28 for bridge beam installation.
- During the overnight hours on Wednesday to Friday, I-66 West will be closed at Route 50 for bridge demolition.
- During the overnight hours on Sunday, a traffic shift and lane split will be implemented on I-66 East between Route 29 in Centreville and Route 28.
- Overnight ramp closures are planned at the following I-66 interchanges: I-495, 495 Express Lanes, Nutley Street, Route 50, Route 28 and Route 29 Centreville.
Work is weather dependent and will be rescheduled in the case of inclement weather.
The I-66/I-495 Interchange is getting several new ramps and connections as part of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project. VDOT is adding access to and from the existing 495 Express Lanes and the new I-66 Express Lanes, as well as new connections between express lanes and general purpose lanes.
The Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project will add 22.5 miles of new I-66 Express Lanes alongside three regular lanes from I-495 to University Boulevard in Gainesville. The Express Lanes are expected to open in December 2022.
