Police Log: Hit And Run Driver Found, Motorist Charged In Crash With Bicyclist

Police issue DUIs, projector missing from Vienna Baptist Church

A Springfield, Va. man was charged in an April 4 hit and run crash near Giant Supermarket.

Police responded to a call of an accident at Maple Avenue and Glyndon Street Southeast around 2:15 p.m.. They determined that Larry Edward Popoure, 56, of Springfield, had operated the striking vehicle, which totaled the opposing car and lefts its driver with minor injuries.

Popure was arrested  and transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention
Center. He was formally charged with the felony of hit and run and driving on a suspended operator's license.   He was held on $1,500 bond.

Another motorist hit a bicyclist while trying to enter Maple Avenue from a parking lot on April 8.

The bicyclist was riding on the sidewalk and passed by the vehicle, assuming the motorist saw him. The vehicle began to move and struck the cyclist.  The driver was charged with failure to pay full time and attention. The bicyclist had minor injuries.

Other highlights from April 8 to April 14

  • An Ayito Road resident that a concrete cat had been stolen from her front yard on April 4. She thinks the cat may have been placed in the roadway, and hit by a passing vehicle.
  • A Louise Archer Elementary School employee reported to police that an iTouch was stolen from her purse between April 6 and 11. Police are investigating the case. 
  • An employee of Vienna Baptist Church reported that a video projector was stolen from inside the church between April 8 and April 10. The case is still being investigated.
  • A woman on Tapawingo Road SW reported she and her husband had been arguing. When police arrived, they  discovered that the woman had turned to walk away from the argument, tripped on a rug and fell. Both the woman and her husband confirmed the story. The husband left the home for the evening.
  • Sometime between April 9 and April 11, the ATM at Burke and Herbert Bank, 302 Maple Ave W, was vandalized, employees reported. 
  • A citizen called Vienna Police to report they had found a friend dead in their Locust Street home. Police say there are no signs of foul play, and detectives will follow up.
  • A resident of Plum Street told police that between April 10 and 13, someone placed four nails under one of his vehicle's tires. A neighbor saw the nails and warned him.
  • At 6 a.m. April 11, a Cottage Street SW resident reported that her neighbors' barking dogs consistently wake her up. The town's animal control officer is following up on the case. 
  • On April 11, a citizen found a live shotgun round on Center Street South and brought it to Vienna Police Headquarters for destruction.
  • A caller complained about a man that was panhandling outside of Giant Food Store on April 11. Police responded and told the man to leave the area to avoid arrest. He left without resistance.
  • A citizen reported a fire near the Northside Property Yard on April 11 around 10:15 p.m. Police found a large tree had fallen in the wooded area and landed on some power lines. This in turn pulled down several utility poles in the area. The falling poles then fell on to 3 parked vehicles.
  • A student at James Madison High School reported  on April 12 that they believed another student was not in school that day because he had been assaulted by his father. Police went to the boy's home, and no visible signs of an assault were observed. Fairfax County Child Protective Services was notified regarding the report and will follow up on this case.
  • A citizen on Upham Place reported on April 12 that she is the executor of her mother in law’s estate and recently discovered that another individual had filed a tax return using the deceased woman’s identity. This case is still being investigated.
  • A worker removing material from the roof of a building on 100 Block Branch Road SE on April 14 was  removing material from the roof of a building and fell through it. The worker fell approximately 18 feet to the floor.
    The worker did not appear to have any significant injuries but was transported to an area hospital for evaluation by Fairfax County EMS.
    A Fairfax County Government building inspector arrived and limited the work area until a structural engineer could assess the roof.

ARRESTS:

  • After stopping a motorist at the intersection of Nutley Street and Tapawingo Road SE, Police discovered the driver was wanted on an outstanding warrant for a probation violation.  Sheridan Lee O’Hara, 21, of Vienna, was arrested and transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. He was held without bond.
  • After stopping a vehicle at East and Echols Streets, Police suspected that the driver was impaired. After several field sobriety tests, Police arrested Lynn M. Kelliher, 47, of Vienna, for driving while intoxicated. She was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and formally charged with driving while intoxicated and refusal to submit to a breath or blood test.
  • Police found a citizen inside Southside Park, 1317 Ross Drive SW, on April 10 after hours. After investigating, Police found marijuana. Ryan Matthew Westover, 20, of Vienna, was issued summonses for possession of marijuana and trespassing and released after signing both.
  • Police responded to a report of a crash on Cottage Street SW on April 11 and found a vehicle on its side, after it had crashed into an unoccupied, parked vehicle. Fairfax County EMS was summoned and responded to treat the driver. They then transported him to an area hospital.While at the hospital MPO Evans had blood drawn for analysis.The driver,  Kevin Drake Ivey, 19, of Vienna was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. and formally charged with driving under the influence.
  • After receiving a report on April 13 that unlicensed solicitor  was going door to door on Tapawingo Road soliciting for home remodeling work, Police responded and issued Michael Dustin Meehan, 23, of Beltsville, Maryland a summons for soliciting without a license.Meehan was released after signing the summons.
  • Police were called to handle a resident who was refused service at the Vienna Inn around 7:30 p.m. on April 13.  Police arrested Linda Schmid, 50, of
     Vienna for drunk in public. She was transported to the Fairfax
    County Adult Detention Center.
  • During a traffic stop at Maple Avenue and Follin lane SE on April 14, Police arrested Frank A. Jennings, 51, of  Lawrenceville, Georgia  for driving while
    intoxicated. During a search incident to arrest suspected marijuana was discovered. Jennings was then transported to Vienna Police Headquarters for analysis of his breath. After the analysis he was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. There he was formally charged with Possession of Marijuana and Driving While Intoxicated. Police found the passenger in the vehicle was also intoxicated.They arrested Roy A. Scarborough, 31, of Gainesville, Georgia for Drunk in Public. He was then transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
