Safety For Schoolchildren To Improve Under New Vienna Project

Drivers and pedestrians will have detours around Marshall Road during construction hours.

VIENNA, VA—On Monday, March 26, the Town of Vienna will kick off a $1.6 million project to improve pedestrian safety for students on Marshall Road SW.

Construction will take place 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday except on holidays. For drivers, Marshall Road will be closed in segments between Rachel Lane and Trowbridge Place. Detours will go through Ware Street, Tapawingo Road, Kingsley Road and Nutley Street.

Residents living on Marshall Road with have access to their homes but should not park cars on the closed portion of the road. Utility disruptions to homes are not anticipated. The town urges residents to stay away from the worksite, which will have equipment, material and other hazards.

For pedestrians, the sidewalk between Trowbridge Place and Delilah Drive will be closed on the south side. Pedestrians can cross at the crosswalk at Delilah Drive and Ware Street. A flagger will assist with crossings during school opening and closing hours.

The project includes sidewalk improvement and roadway replacement project to bolster safety for children walking and biking to Marshall Road Elementary School and other schools. Workers will replace an asphalt path with a concrete sidewalk, elevate the roadway, replace curb and gutter and make additional safety enhancements.

The project received funding through a Virginia Department of Transportation grant and the town's capital improvement funds. The town anticipates the project will be completed by June 23.
