Vienna Coronavirus Update: May Election Delayed By Two Weeks
Northam delayed the elections by two weeks after the Virginia Senate did not approve his proposal to move May local elections to November.
VIENNA, VA — Town of Vienna's council and mayoral election will happen on May 19 after Gov. Ralph Northam moved May 5 local elections two weeks forward. Northam used statutory authority after the Virginia Senate did not pass his proposal Wednesday to move May elections to November. The voter registration deadline was April 13 and did not change.
The new deadline to submit an absentee ballot application is 5 p.m. on May 12. Residents can request an absentee ballot on the Virginia Department of Elections website, pick one up at the kiosk in front of Vienna Town Hall or calling 703-222-0776 to request a mailed ballot. Absentee ballots must be returned to the Fairfax County Office of Elections by 7 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, May 19.
Northam and the Virginia Department of Elections encouraged voters to utilize absentee voting in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Voters are permitted to select "2A My disability or illness" as a reason to vote absentee in the May election due to the pandemic.
