WOODBRIDGE, VA — A man was shot outside of the Riverwoods apartment complex on Monday afternoon. However, police were only able to talk to the victim over the phone, and he refused treatment, according to the Prince William County Police Department.

A shooting was reported to police at 4:41 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 9. Authorities were told it happened in the 2700 block of Dettingen Place at the Riverwoods Apartments.

A witness told officers that they heard gunshots and then saw two men flee the area in a vehicle, according to the police report. One of the men appeared to be injured, the caller said.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found shell casings in the parking lot, the police department said. They canvassed the area in an effort to find any victims or suspects, but did not find anyone. At first, no property damage or injuries were reported to police.

During their investigation, officers believed they identified the shooting victim. His name was not released, but he was described as a 19-year-old man.

The officers were able to contact the man over the phone, police said. He told officers that he was struck and suffered minor injuries.

The victim would not tell officers where he was, so first responders were not able to provide medical treatment or assess his injuries, according to the police report.

Authorities did not state the exact cause of the shooting, or the identity of anyone involved. "The incident supposedly stemmed from a misunderstanding between known parties," the police department wrote in their daily report.

Later in the day, a person in a nearby apartment reported that a bullet had entered their home, but no one else was injured.
