Hotel rooms are Dane County's overflow shelter plan — for now (madison.com) — Madison's new 250-bed men's shelter on Bartillon Drive has opened, but the former Zeier Road facility sits empty while Dane County scrambles to secure about 50 hotel rooms as overflow space this winter. With no funding yet to fix problems at the Zeier site, county supervisors are also backing $2 million for land where people experiencing homelessness could legally sleep outdoors when the shelter is full.
   

2. Wisconsin's college admissions law has unintended consequences (wisconsinwatch.org) — A new Wisconsin law now guarantees UW–Madison admission to students in the top 5% of their high school class, but early data show it changes outcomes for only about 50 students a year. Madison-area educators, lawmakers, and researchers describe how the policy eases anxiety for some local applicants while raising new worries about fairness, grade competition, and whether the flagship will actually keep more high-achieving students in-state.
   

3. Addiction recovery and mental health advocate shares advice for UW students (dailycardinal.com) — UW–Madison students who struggle with alcohol or mental health are urged to use campus resources and speak up when they see friends in trouble, as advocate Riley Whelan shares her recovery story and practical advice. With surveys showing Badgers drink at higher and riskier rates than the national average, she argues social media and campus outreach can better connect students to affordable treatment options in Wisconsin.
   

4. Virtual Farm Tours showcase technology and sustainability at World Dairy Expo (agrinews-pubs.com) — Madison residents heading to World Dairy Expo can catch Virtual Farm Tours Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at the Alliant Energy Center, or stream them online. Each morning session spotlights a different innovative dairy farm from Washington, Michigan, or Texas, showcasing technology, sustainability practices, and herd management strategies that are shaping modern dairy production.

Nominate your business as a Top Workplace (madison.com) — Madison-area workers can now nominate their employers for the 2026 Madison Top Workplaces awards, recognizing organizations with strong, supportive cultures across Dane and nearby counties. Any public, private, nonprofit, school, or government employer with at least 35 employees is eligible, and nominations are open through Sept. 25, with employee surveys running into November.
