Cheyenne To Host Mural & Plaque Dedication Ceremony For 150th Anniversary Of Women’s Suffrage

CHEYENNE – In honor of the 150th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage, a mural and plaque dedication ceremony will take place Thursday, September 19th at 1:30 p.m. at the corner of W. 17th St. and Carey Ave.

Mayor Marian Orr – Cheyenne’s first female mayor – will welcome those in attendance and provide remarks. Members of the Daughters of the America Revolution (DAR) – who cleaned and restored the plaque -- will also provide remarks during the ceremony.

The corner of W. 17th and Carey is the site where the Council of the First Territorial Legislature of Wyoming met in September of 1869 and passed the first resolution granting women the right to vote and hold public office. Two months later, on December 10, 1869, Wyoming Territorial Governor John Campbell signed the legislation, making Wyoming the first place in the United States to provide such rights to women – more than 50 years prior to the U.S. ratification of the 19th amendment.

The City will live stream the ceremony on their Facebook page for those unable to attend.

To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage, 2019 has been declared the “Year of Wyoming Women”.
