Salvation Army facing urgent need for canned good, non-perishables (whnt.com) — Huntsville's Salvation Army is warning of a critical food shortage and is urgently asking local residents to donate canned and non-perishable items. With more families struggling to afford groceries and housing, the group expects demand to keep rising and says continued community support is essential to keep pantry services running without interruption.

2. Huntsville Police announce DUI checkpoint locations for Friday (waff.com) — Huntsville Police will run a DUI traffic safety checkpoint today, and drivers may be asked for license, registration, and proof of insurance while officers watch closely for impairment and other violations. Residents are urged to plan sober rides in advance and to report suspected impaired drivers to HPD's non-emergency line or 911 for immediate dangers.

3. Huntsville launches façade grant program for Mill Creek businesses (waff.com) — Huntsville businesses in the Mill Creek neighborhood can now apply for city grants of up to $25,000 to upgrade their building exteriors, from paint and windows to signage and ADA improvements. Funded with $175,000 in federal dollars, the program targets operating businesses near downtown, with applications already under review and awards expected within about 60 days.

4. Mental Health First Aid Equips UAH Faculty, Staff To Support Students (huntsvillebusinessjournal.com) — UAH in Huntsville is expanding support for students' mental health by training faculty and staff in Mental Health First Aid, with another class scheduled on campus Oct. 22. Trained employees learn to recognize warning signs, offer safe initial help, and connect students to the Counseling Center, which reports higher persistence rates among students who use its services.
