1. MCPSS proposes nearly $1 billion FY2027 budget (mynbc15.com) — Mobile County Public Schools are weighing a $919.6 million FY2027 budget that spends about $69 million more than projected revenue, drawing heavily on reserves. The plan boosts state and local funding, increases instructional and debt-service spending, trims capital projects and administration, and will be discussed at public hearings on September 8 and 16.
   

2. As Regions Arena rises, downtown Mobile hotel site eyes major redevelopment (al.com) — A major redevelopment could replace the aging Quality Inn on Church Street with two new upscale hotels and mixed-use space, but it hinges on a key zoning change the Mobile City Council will vote on next Tuesday. City leaders say aligning the site's height limits with nearby towers would maximize benefits from the new Regions Arena, cruise terminal, convention center, and Mardi Gras activities for downtown Mobile.
   

3. Penn, NAACP push for review of city-funded games amid Port City Classic cut (al.com) — Mobile's mayor and City Council are debating whether to cut city funding for the Port City Classic and other HBCU games, even as overall support for event contracts rises. Local NAACP leaders and Councilman Cory Penn want a uniform performance review of all city-funded football games before any are eliminated, arguing these events generate major economic activity for Mobile.
   

4. Voucher dispute erupts for Mobile housing project amid request for nearly $2 million in city funds (fox10tv.com) — City of Mobile officials and the Mobile Housing Authority are clashing over voucher use for Taylor Landing, a 70-home project meant to house Oaklawn residents without raising their rent burden. The City Council is weighing nearly $2 million more in local funds on top of $11.5 million already committed, with a vote expected next week that would clear the way for construction to start in October.
   

5. Audition deadline approaching for ADYW's Gulf Coast Spotlight Talent Showcase (fox10tv.com) — Mobile and Baldwin County students in grades 1–12 can audition for the Gulf Coast Spotlight Talent Showcase, with clips due by September 26 and the live show set for November 1 at Murphy High School. Winners earn money for their schools and a chance to perform during America's Distinguished Young Women National Finals, while a September sneaker drive with Run-N-Tri will help fund ADYW programs.
