1. Montgomery police radio calls moved off public scanner channels (montgomeryadvertiser.com) — Montgomery Police have moved their radio calls to encrypted channels, meaning residents can no longer follow incidents on public scanners while officials say the change improves safety and privacy. The department promises continued transparency through releases and social media, as neighboring agencies weigh similar moves or cite cost and coordination concerns about encryption.
   

2. Montgomery YMCA branch reopens with new improvements, new name (waka.com) — A newly renovated YMCA on Pelzer Avenue in Montgomery has reopened as the Dalraida Family YMCA after a $2.5 million, year-and-a-half transformation that added major wellness space and kid-focused "Y-Town" features. Montgomery families now have expanded weight, cardio, and group exercise areas, plus an interactive mini-town designed to connect children with real local institutions and careers.
   

3. Interstate 85 widening project in Montgomery to start (waka.com) — Interstate 85 through Montgomery is about to gain a third lane each way from Taylor Road to Jenkins Creek, bringing years of construction and changing traffic patterns around the Chantilly Parkway interchange. Expect rolling roadblocks, nighttime lane closures, temporary turn restrictions, detours via Arrowhead Drive and Eastchase Parkway, and occasional weekend closures as ALDOT advances this $71 million project.
   

4. 25th anniversary of September 11 terrorist attacks remembered in downtown Montgomery (waka.com) — Downtown Montgomery residents joined city leaders, firefighters, and federal lawmakers outside Montgomery Fire/Rescue headquarters to mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The ceremony honored the 343 New York firefighters lost that day and remembered 15 Montgomery firefighters who have died in the line of duty, with local officials thanking current crews for their ongoing service.
   

5. Montgomery woman shares first-hand account of Sept. 11 attacks in NYC (wsfa.com) — A Montgomery woman who was living just four miles from the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 shares how she experienced the attacks and helped care for first responders and displaced residents. She recalls the shock, communication blackout with family back in Alabama, and the massive volunteer response that followed. Now, she's back in New York, reconnecting with colleagues and visiting the 9/11 Memorial.
