East Alabama attorney begins jail time in deadly, distracted driving crash (wrbl.com) — An east Alabama attorney has begun serving a one-year jail term at the Lee County Detention Facility for a 2020 distracted-driving crash on I-85 in Opelika that killed another driver. Prosecutors say he was using social media at highway speeds and never braked, and his sentence includes speaking to at least 10 groups about the dangers of distracted driving. 
2. Opelika man charged with Attempted Murder in early morning shooting with injuries (wrbl.com) — Opelika police have charged a 26-year-old local man with attempted murder after a January 31 shooting on Waverly Parkway that sent another man to the hospital. Investigators say victim information led to the arrest, and officers are asking anyone with tips to contact Opelika Police or the Secret Witness Hotline, where callers can remain anonymous.
