📰 News we're reading

1. Scottsdale City Council to vote on Flock cameras in December meeting (azfamily.com) — Scottsdale leaders are keeping the city's 85 Flock license-plate cameras running while staff drafts new safeguards, audits, and potential penalties for misuse ahead of a December 1 vote. After hearing heated public testimony and privacy concerns, council ordered an independent review, possible vendor alternatives, and a public-facing transparency site so residents can weigh in on how the technology is used.

2. Scottsdale murder case on hold after suspect found incompetent to stand trial (azfamily.com) — A Scottsdale homicide case is paused after a judge ruled the accused killer of a local resident incompetent to stand trial, sending him to a county restoration program for treatment. Investigators say the suspect had been living with the victim, whom he met at a church cooling center. The next court hearing is scheduled for November 11, leaving the community awaiting further developments.

3. Fiery crash restricts traffic on Loop 101 near Scottsdale (azfamily.com) — If you're driving near Scottsdale tonight, expect major delays on Loop 101, where a fiery crash has shut all northbound lanes and blocked key southbound lanes near McKellips Road. Crews are on scene with heavy smoke visible, and there's no estimate yet for when the freeway will reopen. Drivers should avoid the area and plan alternate routes through the East Valley.

4. Tribe Buys Scottsdale Princess (connectcre.com) — Scottsdale residents should know that the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess resort has been purchased by the San Manuel Investment Authority, a tribal investment arm from California. The 65‑acre property, home to popular events like Freedom Fest and Christmas at the Princess and adjacent to TPC Scottsdale, will now join the tribe's growing portfolio of luxury resorts.

5. Can machines reason? Depends on what you mean by 'reason' (mindmatters.ai) — Scottsdale will host the COSM 2026 "Reality Check" conference November 18–20, bringing experts together to debate whether machines can truly reason like humans. The event builds on a recent philosophical essay contrasting AI optimization with deeper human moral reasoning. Local residents interested in technology, ethics, and society can attend and join the discussion.
