76 Alameda Tickets In One Day

Police crack down on drivers who ignore pedestrian safety.

ALAMEDA, CA — If you've ever felt as if you were taking your life in your hands while crossing the street in a crosswalk - you will appreciate this story.

Last Thursday, the Alameda Police Department conducted a pedestrian sting operation at various locations where there has been a significant number of traffic violations and motorists who cases where drivers failed to yield to pedestrians crossing the street.

According to police, "A decoy pedestrian was used to walk across various intersections while uniformed officers on marked motorcycles waited. If the driver violated the pedestrian’s right-of-way, officers would make a traffic stop and issue a citation."

Officers also stopped speeders, drivers using cellphones, and drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts.

The grand total: 76 citations were issued and dozens more were stopped and educated on lawful driving practices.

"All citations were written to drivers who had the clear opportunity to see the pedestrian decoy crossing the street and had plenty of time to come to a stop," police reported in their written statement. "Of those cited, some were found to be driving without insurance, a license or other violations."

Police also released a video on social media about safe driving.
