Summer Sailstice

Sailors around the world are making plans to celebrate the sailing lifestyle by getting out on the water for Summer Sailstice, Saturday, June 18 at Encinal and Oakland Yacht Clubs in Alameda; some will even compete in the 4th annual “Build a Boat” competition.

“We have returning teams and we’re opening a few spots to new contenders wishing to compete in this year’s rollicking DIY challenge,” said John Arndt, founder of Summer Sailstice and Latitude 38 associate publisher. “Local boat yards, shipwrights, sailing fans and yacht club members with construction skills are encouraged to join the fun!”

Build a Boat Rules and Regulations Six teams of three people each will work side-by-side for approximately seven hours to build their boats at the festival, then race their craft over a brief course in the Oakland Estuary. Boats may be rowed or sailed. Construction materials are limited to a value of $150 or less, and may include wood, plywood, recycled materials. Teams will be reimbursed construction costs up to $150 and may bring and use two

“I encourage sailing enthusiasts to drum up a little intra-yacht club competition and challenge their neighbors to put together a team, then submit a design for consideration,” said Ariane Paul, coordinator of the Build a Boat competition. “The construction zone becomes a major entertainment center as fans, peers and onlookers track progress, cheer and applaud as the boats hit the water and race to the finish line.

To enter, submit an advance description of boat design plans, plus intended materials, by Monday, June 13 to arianepaul@yahoo.com, (415) 806-2299. Build a Boat contest sponsors include WoodenBoat magazine and the Berkeley Marine Center.
