The City of Alameda will go forward with the replacement of a condemned fire station in the middle of the city, but will do so without the support of its mayor, Trish Herrera Spencer.

In a 4 – 1 vote last night at the City Council meeting, Alameda approved construction of replacing the City’s Fire Station 3 and building it in conjunction with the already approved Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Mayor Herrera Spencer was the lone vote against the replacement of this critical community safety project.

Fire Station 3 was closed 14 years ago after city inspector’s determined the building likely would not withstand a high magnitude earthquake. Firefighters have been housed at a rental property next door, scrambling to get the fire engine for responses, which is still stored in the apparatus room of the closed fire station.

Alameda Firefighter’s President Jeff DelBono said, “The replacement of Station 3 has the solid support of city staff and is very much needed for the safety of the community. Its central location is critical for timely emergency responses to all types of calls citywide, including fires and medical emergencies, along with staffing the fireboat. We are thankful to the four City Council members who voted in support of this”.

DelBono added, “This mayor was elected by the voters to protect the citizens of Alameda. It is her duty to do so. I cannot understand as to why she would be against this project. Her action of voting against the replacement of Fire Station 3 demonstrates a lack of regard for the safety of our community”.

The Fire Station 3 replacement project, along with the EOC, will now move forward, better protecting the citizens and visitors to our city.
