Rotary Hosts Special Event Focused On Service And Community

Avenues Of Service October 2ND!

Rotary District 5170 (www.rotarydistrict5170.org) will be hosting a special event that invites you and about 500 current and prospective members of Rotary District 5170 for Avenues of Service, an exploration of how its 61 Bay Area clubs foster fellowship and participate in community services projects in their local communities and around globally.

The event will be held Saturday, October 2, 2021, at a lively gathering at the Alameda County Fairgrounds from 10:30 am – 3:00 pm.

The venue will provide ample room for social distancing. Centers for Disease Control and Alameda County Health Department mandates will be observed. Simultaneous remote viewing will also be available on Zoom.

The Five Avenues of Service, comprised of club service, vocational service, community service, international service, and youth service, form the foundation that has served Rotary International and its current 1.2 million members.

ABOUT THE AVENUE OF SERVICE EVENT

The event starts at 10:30 am and will kick off with a guest speaker, Linda Coble, a precedent-setting television news anchorwoman, and Rotary leader, who will address a lunchtime assembly.

Coble was the first female anchor on a network-affiliated local news show in Hawaii. She was one of the first female members of Rotary International, and she has since served as the first female president of the Rotary Club of Honolulu and first female president of Rotary District 5000, which manages 53 Rotary clubs on the five islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Lanai, and Hawaii.

PROJECT FAIR SHOWCASE

Numerous Rotary clubs will showcase service projects, such as

  • Refurbishing CPAPs for obstructive sleep apnea to treat COVID-19 in India;
  • Using a portion of the $40,000 raised by the district’s Interact high school community clubs to provide more than 5000 solar cookers to refugee camps in Afghanistan
  • A $46,000 global grant that financed Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education and Learning (RACHEL) to deliver access to the digital library to nine schools in Guatemala
  • A $35,000 global grant for 80 composting latrines in seven rural communities in Nicaragua.
