Body Found In Grand Canyon Believed To Be Missing North Bay Man
Peter Schwab, 66, of Healdsburg, was reported missing June 28 at Grand Canyon National Park.

HEALDSBURG, CA — The search for a North Bay man who went missing at Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona may have come to an end. The National Park Service reported Thursday that a body found in the Colorado River Wednesday is believed to be that of Peter Francis Schwab, 66, of Healdsburg.
Schwab was reported missing after he did not return June 28 from a day hike in the Grand Canyon. Schwab was a passenger on a commercial river trip June 28, and was last seen near river mile 167 on a small beach downriver from the National Canyon, according to NPS Spokeswoman Becky Latanich.
"Schwab was reported missing after a sightseeing stop at National Canyon," Latanich said.

A missing person search-and-rescue operation was conducted over the weekend of June 28-30 and when that was not successful, the status of the search effort changed Monday, July 1, to "limited continuous searching," Latanich told Patch.
On Wednesday, July 10, National Park Service personnel were notified of a body in the Colorado River below Lava Falls near river mile 181.

Latanich said park rangers responded and recovered the body, which was transported to the park's rim by helicopter and transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
"Based on evidence found with the body, it is believed to be that of missing commercial river trip passenger Peter Schwab," Latanich said.
The National Park Service and the medical examiner are conducting a joint investigation of the incident, with the medical examiner tasked with confirming positive identification of the body, according to Latanich.
