It was a busy afternoon for the Orange County Fire Authority. First, with a house fire in Laguna Woods that displaced a 107-year-old woman Thursday. The blaze, which struck up in the woman's single story home garage, burned so intently that the structural integrity of the home has been severely damaged. Images from the scene show the damage to the structure, which is likely a total loss.

Later, Thursday, every mother's fear struck home at the Shops at Mission Viejo Mall when a toddler became stuck in an escalator's moving parts. Orange County Fire Authority made a rapid response to free the wailing child.

Gov. Jerry Brown Thursday signed "sanctuary state" legislation authored by a Los Angeles lawmaker that limits local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities. This legislation, however, was criticized by Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, who said restrictions may hamper law enforcement efforts.

Chanting slogans and standing atop bunk-bed frames, immigration-rights protesters temporarily blocked traffic near the federal building in Westwood. The rally, declared an "unlawful assembly" by the LAPD, coincides with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals deadline for work-permit renewals.

In Los Angeles, a confidential settlement was reached in a lawsuit filed by a woman who alleged her former English teacher at an all-girls school sexually abused and impregnated her. The former student alleges the teacher "systematically lured" her into a year long sexual relationship. But, her case will move forward against another Los Angeles County school where the teacher previously worked, court papers obtained Wednesday show.
