Landslide Swallows Backyard In Newport Beach Thursday

An abrupt landslide has endangered three homes, resulting in yellow tags from emergency officials.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — An abrupt landslide has endangered three homes in Newport Beach on Thursday, county officials said.

The slide was reported in the 1400 block of Galaxy Drive at around 4 a.m., city official John Pope told KTLA 5.

The location, which looks out to the back bay and the Upper Newport Bay State Marine Conservation Area, is just a few blocks from a slide that occurred in March 2023.

Three homes were yellow-tagged as a result of the landslide, including one home that appeared to have lost most of its back yard.

Emergency crews were on scene as of 2 p.m. Thursday. No injuries were reported.

Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley, along with Newport Beach City Officials, state Assemblywoman Diane Dixon and representatives from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife were also on scene to assist residents.

"We provided the homeowners information about property tax relief from the County Assessors office, and are working to connect the tenants with some resources while they’re displaced from their homes," Foley said on X, formerly Twitter.
