Coronavirus: 80 Cases Confirmed, New Restrictions In San Diego

An additional 20 cases of the new coronavirus were confirmed Wednesday in San Diego County, bringing the region's total to 80.

SAN DIEGO, CA — An additional 20 cases of the new coronavirus were confirmed Wednesday in San Diego County, bringing the region's total to 80.

A total of 67 county residents have tested positive for COVID-19 as well as five people under federal quarantine and eight non-county residents, according to officials.

Of those cases, 27 are women and 53 are men. Eleven of the patients have been hospitalized.

Although county residents aren't currently joining the millions of Californians sheltering in place, county officials expanded public health orders Wednesday to help slow the spread of coronavirus.

The county is banning gatherings of 10 or more people in one room and smaller groups must stay six feet apart.

Additionally, the county is closing all gyms and fitness centers. Day care centers are being restricted to groups of up to 10 children in the same room. The children must remain in the same group each day, with the same staff person.

"We must limit the number of people coming together if we are to keep COVID-19 from spreading locally," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "This is a fluid situation and people should stay home to avoid getting the novel coronavirus."
