PORTOLA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN SAN BRUNO CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY

San Bruno, CA. May 16, 2016. Almost two hundred years after the European discovery of San Francisco Bay led by Gaspar de Portola, Portola Elementary School was built near the explorers' encampment site and dedicated in 1966. Praised at the time for its innovative modern school design of brick, plastic, fabric, carpeting, and featuring movable walls allowing flexibility for team teaching techniques, the school originally belonged to the Laguna Salada School District. In 2000, Portola was annexed to the San Bruno Park School District (SBPSD) to better serve families in the Portola and Pacific Heights

In 2006, the award recognized school vision, leadership, and school planning resulting in students excelling in academics and extracurricular activities. In 2014, the award recognized Portola's Academic Performance Index (API) scores increasing from 871 to 929 and honored the school for its innovative approaches to learning and enhanced parent and community engagement that accomplished such growth in student success.
