Driver Killed In Fiery Crash In Marin County: Police

A public works crew helped put out the flames after the car struck a tree, police said.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — A driver died Wednesday morning after their car crashed into a tree and burst into flames, police said.

The San Rafael Police Department stated the fatal solo-vehicle collision was reported just after 8 a.m. Wednesday on Lincoln Avenue, south of Wilson Court.

Police said a four-door sedan was traveling north on Lincoln Avenue when it veered across the southbound lane, struck the west curb, and then crashed into a tree, catching fire.

A nearby work crew from the San Rafael Department of Public Works was the first to respond, helping to extinguish the flames until the San Rafael Fire Department and paramedics arrived, police said.

Emergency personnel began life-saving measures and worked to remove the driver from the burning vehicle.

The driver, who was the sedan’s only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Lincoln Avenue was closed in both directions for around three hours during the emergency response and investigation but has since reopened.

The Marin County coroner's office will identify the driver pending notification of the next-of-kin.
