Marin Businesses Urged To Use Dedicated Hours For Senior Shoppers

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Marin County Public Health is recommending that grocery stores and other retail stores that sell essential items reserve a time for senior shoppers in an effort to protect the most vulnerable residents from the new coronavirus.

Stores could open earlier or dedicate the earliest hours of the regular business day for seniors. The recommendation, however, will not be enforced as part of the county's public health order, according to Dr. Matt Willis, county public health officer.

"Although this is not a mandate, it is a recommendation to join the community-wide response and reduce anxiety for our older residents," Willis said.

It is recommended that residents 65 and older and people with weakened immune systems use home delivery services whenever possible.

Marin has one of the largest populations of older residents in the state, with nearly 30 percent of residents over 65. The demographic mix increases overall community risk to virus exposure.
