Repairs Completed On Walnut Creek's Water Main Break

Roughly 15 businesses and an apartment complex in the area were without water for a brief spell.

Contra Costa Water District crews have finished repairing a water main today that broke Monday night in Walnut Creek, a spokeswoman for the district said.

The break was initially reported between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Monday in the area of North Main Street near Geary Road, district spokeswoman Jennifer Allen said. No cause for the break has been identified, but Allen said it’s likely the result of 50- to 60-year-old pipes wearing out.

It was the second time this year that the 12-inch pipe ruptured, according to the water district.

The pipe also burst in January in an area of North Main Street between Geary Road and Sunnyvale Avenue, although Allen said it did not break in exactly the same location. She said the water district annually reviews pipes in need of replacement and while this stretch of pipe hadn’t been identified in the past, it would likely be a candidate for a future upgrade.

Roughly 15 businesses and an apartment complex were without water for around an hour, Allen said.

One southbound lane and one of the left-turn lanes was closed at the intersection of North Main Street and Geary Road while crews completed the repairs, according to city officials.

Water district workers had finished the repairs by around 3:30 p.m. and Allen said they are expected to clear the area before 5 p.m.
