Norwich Man, 42, Dies In Police Custody, Autopsy Underway: State

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy Saturday to determine the cause and manner of Brenton Chambers' death.

NORWICH, CT — A Norwich man died while he was in Norwich Police custody Friday, according to state law enforcement officials.

Identified by the Office of the Inspector General as Brenton Chambers, 42, an investigation is underway by that agency and the state police Central District Major Crime Squad. State law requires the Office of the Inspector General to investigate when someone dies while in the custody of police.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner told Patch early Saturday morning that Chambers' autopsy was "in progress" and as yet cannot provide the cause and manner of his death.

Chambers was in a police holding cell when he died, the Norwich Bulletin reported. Per that report, a person in the office of the Inspector General said the agency was "notified of Chambers' death at approximately 3:30 a.m. Friday."

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner told Patch early Saturday morning that Chambers' autopsy was "in progress" and as yet cannot provide the cause and manner of his death.

In response to a request for more information, a spokesperson for the Connecticut State Police told Patch, "Our office was advised to refer all media inquiries relative to this incident to the CT Division of Criminal Justice."
