Student Finds Worm in Fruit Cup at Wallingford School

The fruit cup was served as part of a school lunch.

A Sheehan student recently discovered a worm in a fruit cup that was served in a school lunch, according to the Meriden Record-Journal.

The Record-Journal reports that the worm was sent to a lab for testing and some parents expressed concern on the quality of the food being served at Sheehan after students took cell phone pictures showing worms and a moldy loaf of bread.

Food Services Director Sharlene Wong told the Record-Journal that this is the first time she’s ever seen a student find a worm in a can of fruit in her 30 years of working in school nutrition and she believes it’s an isolated issue and the Sheehan cafeteria doesn’t have a sanitation issue.

Wallingford Superintendent of Schools Dr. Salvatore Menzo told NBC Connecticut that the district’s food distributor, Sysco Corp., looked into the issue immediately. He said that the limited use of pesticides in orchards makes it difficult to completely eradicate pests from food products.

Menzo also told NBC that school officials are proactively working to enforce quality control.
