Four women have been charged by Canton police with forgery in the first degree after they tried to use several counterfeit checks at a local clothing store.

Lisa Pruitt, 33, of Atlanta, Larrice Ford, 32, of Stockbridge, Shantrice Glenn, 25, of East Point and Toereall Powell, 33, of Union City were all charged with forgery in the first degree after they allegedly presented counterfeit checks to employees at a Canton Marketplace business, the Canton Police Department said in a press release.

Each woman was booked into the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center with $17,800, Cherokee Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker said. Additionally, Powell has been placed on hold for Fulton County.

Canton officers were called to the business due to the suspicion of counterfeit checks as well as a call about a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot.

Canton police said the checks had pre-printed logos of various banking institutions.

Those institutions were contacted and it was revealed the checks were printed using invalid routing and account numbers.

The agency said they believe the suspects targeted The Children’s Place stores throughout the metro Atlanta area, but it is possible they have also tried to use the checks at other businesses.

The investigation remains active as Canton detectives are in contact with other metro Atlanta law enforcement agencies to determine if similar transactions occurred in their jurisdictions.
